Incorporated in 1865, the Village of Barrington, located in southwest Lake County, extends south into Cook County. Major employers include Good Shepherd Hospital, GE Capital Auto Financing Services, Park Foods LP, Recon/Optical, and International Decorators.


Because of Barrington's location near the Fox River Valley, Chain O'Lakes recreational area, and the Lake Barrington Water Sports Center, area residents can participate in swimming, sailing, wind surfing, ice skating, and cross-country skiing. In addition, equestrian activities can be pursued in the surrounding forested areas and at the many stables in the area.


Barrington serves its students with eight public elementary schools, two public junior high schools and one public high school in the Barrington Unit District #220 with total enrollment of 7,695. There is one parochial elementary school in town.


Barrington has many architectural styles from restored century-old homes to newer traditional and contemporary-styled homes. The 2000 median house value was $329,900 and the median rent cost was $931.  (U.S. Census Bureau, 2000)

Fire protection for the village is provided by the Barrington Fire Department, which has 48 volunteer firefighters, 11 full time paramedic and firefighter/paramedics and two stations. Police protection for the village is provided by the Barrington Police Department's 29 sworn officers.


Metra's Chicago & Northwestern/Northwest Line express commuter trains reach the Loop in 46 minutes from the station located in the village. For those driving, access to Interstate 90 lies six miles south of the village and provides rapid highway travel to Chicago, other suburbs, Rockford, and Milwaukee.
